Progress

While Cam and I have been pushing through the digital model we came across a few last conceptual sketch ideas to cap off our design. As an overall master plan approach we have decided to develop a transition from solid mass to a more open tectonic structural system as you can see that starts to happen in the image below on the right. From here we are just going to see what evolves as we continue.

After the rigorous development of our model we have come to a point were it is time to wrap things up and prepare a final presentation. The model came together nicely with only slit speed bumps however we worked through them quickly. We went through various roof ideas before landing on a slit pitch that plays off the slope of the site.

one step closer

Today we have come a step closer to what we are trying to achieve. We feel like we have a conceptual layout dialed in and its ready to take form in the computer.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

Before moving into the development of our design, Cameron and I felt like we needed something more to move us forward. So it was right back to the drawing board! We just haven’t been satisfied with our layout and programmatic placements. At this point we also have not identified a style of architecture we are excited about that will define our design. With that in mind we approached different geometries and came across something that sparked some interest.

The idea of three separate spaces accrued into four which are the production, office management, lobby/tasting, and the apparatus/networking spaces. The layout still shares the separation of built structures with a slight connection expressed through circulation. The first sketch below shows several tasting spaces disconnected from the central collection. That idea quickly faded out and by the last sketch our ideas have been redefined and simplified.

Moving into Massing

After throwing around more ideas and a quick visit with Lance, Cameron and I have come to the conclusion that our main focus is going to be on the winery its self and less on the hubs. Reason being is that the winery is going to be more of a static architecture as the hubs will be more of a user enhanced open source design and will not be limited to a franchise appearance around the world. The hubs will take into account the local surroundings, culture, and user/owner tastes.

So we have moved into some massing models to express some of our ideas for the winery. The image below was a stab at curving the roof plains from a central source over separated program spaces. We feel it is important to keep the spaces separate with out losing an appearance of connection between the spaces.

Here is another approach of trying to express a sense of connection between the three separated spaces using a roof that ties them all together. We felt that expressing the structure and leaving an opening would not only allow light to penetrate through to the central courtyard space but also connect to our concept of networking.

Concept Sketches

Let the designing begin! With our design brief laid out Cameron and I have jumped into the design of our winery which is located in Depoe Bay, Oregon. Currently we feel that our main focus is going to be on the design of three hubs however given that the winery is going to be the main source of the hubs we feel that we need to design it first. Below are three different concept sketches. Starting on the left we have the layout I approached. I took into account the impact the views looking north from the site towards the marina would have on the positioning of the winery. With the idea of creating a networking wine culture I also proposed to separate the program spaces into individual built structures and use the circulation to create a sense of connection between the spaces. The middle sketch is Cameron’s approach. He also attacked the idea of separating the spaces into individual built structures although his is more programmatically separated. On the right Cameron and I came together and merged our ideas into one concept sketch. In this sketch we still have the program spaces separated but the spaces are stacked on top of each other.

RU(M)INATIONS: THE HAUNTS OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

John McMorrough’s article RU(M)INATIONS: THE HAUNTS OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE was first published in 2008 and is directed towards the future of architectural design. In the article McMorrough conveys his thoughts and position on “intelligence of previous generations” and how today’s designers and or architects in some way have linked their work with previous techniques. There is some logic, theory, or practice that is inspired by a sense of familiarity that one can relate to. McMorrough uses the term “zombie-architects” to relate this connection to expressing how there is a repetition of paths traveled in their previous lives.

McMorrough also uses the terms “ruination and rumination” to represent “how a specific historical juncture architecture entered into a problematic relationship with the capacity to make proposals and instead focused on issues of signification.” (McMorrough, p. 463) He merges the terms into ru(m)ination to “define the twists and turns of architecture’s epistemological machinations, and at this point are synonymous with the very idea of architectural disciplinarity, then and now.” (McMorrough, p. 463)

Today architecture is derived using more advanced technologies than in the past. With technology enhanced design there is the ability to change the way architecture is perceived and created, however we still express a connection to what we know can be created, and what has been created. McMorrough feels that in order to change architecture we must first evaluate our goals and the paths taken to achieve our goals. In a way inventing new concepts that will provide a new evolution of architecture that doesn’t relate to historical context.

Design Brief

Here’s a copy of the design brief that Cameron and I have put together. It encompasses what we wish to accomplish with this project and where we want to start.

Conceptual Advancement

After mid-term we had for the most part a successful apparatus endeavour. However Cameron and I don’t feel like we are through with it. We are interested in enhancing our design to incorporating it into our architecture. Making the jump to the next portion of our semester Cameron and I are the only group that is going to continue working together.

In the early stages of our research our focus was on how taste, smell, and color of wine is perceived. Then it grew into a more in-depth perspective that incorporated a system of recoding wine. The QR code brought forth the sense of a network and with the help of technology we could portray a broader collection of information that would define a users point of view of the product. With that in mind we felt that the idea of networking would be the more aggressive concept to take away from our apparatus and use towards our next step. Here is an image that I put together to express the idea of a shared network.

The image inside the human outline is a microscopic image of neural coils found within a biological system. This system exchanges metabolic data in the form of electrical impulses that are encoded with information to carry out the body’s voluntary and involuntary metabolic functions. The background in the image is the opposite networking system consisting of an electrical circuit which is man-made. This image express’ the link of networks from a human to the networking world in an abstract way.
